Gearing up for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

As Labor Day weekend quickly approaches, it only means one thing, ok maybe it means a few things but either way the Rocky Mountain Showdown is upon us once again!

In years past the debate between participating in the widely popular Tour de Fat put on by New Belgium and attending the biggest football rivalry in Colorado has been a big issue for many.  Well this year they got the scheduling right and you won’t have to pick and choose!  The Rocky Mountain Showdown will be taking place at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Sunday, September 1st at 4pm.

Both the Colorado State University Rams and the University of Colorado Buffaloes have had this day marked on their calendars since they met last year, when the Rams came out on top with the 22-17 win.  Players, alumni and football fans in general have seen this rivalry go back and forth over the last few years and it’s sure to be a hard fought game again this year.  So, we suggest taking the time to enjoy this in-state rivalry that dates back to 1893 no matter who you’re cheering for.

We know that some of you have been planning your game days plans for weeks if not months now.  Whether it’s getting to the parking lot early to claim your favorite tailgate spot or showing up early at your favorite sports bar to get the best spot in front of the big screen, it’s a great day to share a cold beer with friends (maybe even an enemy).  Beer sure to pack the cooler with plenty of beers for you and your tailgating companions, running out would be a rookie mistake.  Also, many locations will be running game day drink specials all across the state so be sure to ask your server or bartender if you go out!

Don’t forget to plan ahead and have a sober means of transportation if you are partaking in beers and libations.

New Belgium Tour de Fat

For one day out of the year you can ride around town in the craziest outfit you can possibly think of and not hear whispering wonders of “What are they thinking!?” Instead you are cheered on by hundreds of spectators and thousands of others just like yourself as you come together to cruise through the heart of Fort Collins on your bike!

As one of the most anticipated events that takes place in Fort Collins, New Belgium’s Tour de Fat is just days away and we’re sure that you’re full of excitement just like we are! So on August 31st, start your Labor Day weekend off right and join thousands of beer and bike enthusiasts to help raise money for local non-profits.

The day of “bemusement” begins with everyone’s favorite, the bike parade! Bike riders of all ages are encouraged to dress in the wildest and most creative costumes possible to increase the fun level. In years past there have even been many specially crafted and decorated bikes too, there’s no such thing as too wild as long as safety comes first, so get creative! Procrastinators, we suggest that you blindly reach into your closet or dresser drawers to select your outfit for the day.

After riding through beautiful Fort Collins, the tour will come to an end at Civic Center Park, where there will be lots more fun to be had! Enter the giant beer and bike party to enjoy great local food and of course some of New Belgium’s great beers like; Fat Tire, 1554, Rampant and even some of their Lips of Faith series beers. Attendees will be treated to artistic and musical talents from the likes Reggie Watts, the Scott Nery Show, Mama Lou – Strong Woman and Fierce Bad Rabbit.

In the midst of all the beer sampling and merriment one lucky guy or gal will take the main stage and hand over the keys to their car as they take an oath to stick to two wheels as their mode of transportation for the next year. Each winner is carefully selected based off of their 2 minute submission on Facebook and are handsomely rewarded with a $2,250 stipend to build their own custom commuter. The vehicles handed over are auctioned off and all proceeds go towards local cycling organizations in the surrounding community.

There are not many other things that are better than dressing up, biking and enjoying great beer and food on a Saturday, all for a good cause. New Belgium’s got a good thing going!

Ride Safe!
